Looking for Something?

Enough

A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
    the way for the Lord;
make straight in the desert
    a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be raised up,

    every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
    the rugged places a plain.
And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,

and all people will see it together.
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

-Isaiah 40:3-5 NIV

Moving through the desert,
One step at a time,
Looking for anything
What can be found?

Needing a rescue
But nothing is coming
God if you’re with me
Then where are you now?

He asks, Don’t you know?
I’ve already provided
Come to the fountain,
I’m the only one who can satisfy.
Turn from the cisterns
They’re broken away
Come to the fountain
I won’t let you down.

“What wrong did your fathers find in me
that they went far from me,
and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?
They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord
who brought us up from the land of Egypt,
who led us in the wilderness,
in a land of deserts and pits,
in a land of drought and deep darkness,
in a land that none passes through,
    where no man dwells?’
Be appalled, O heavens, at this;
    be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,
for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
    the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.
-Jeremiah 2:5-6, 12-13

I’m the only one for you
I know you inside and out
My grace will never run dry
Am I, Am I,
Enough for you?

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” -John 4:13-14

Crawling through the darkness
One inch at a time
Looking for anything
What can be found?

Needing a rescue
But nothing is coming
God if you’re with me
Then where are you now?

He asks, Don’t you know?
I’ve already provided
Come to the light
I’m the only one who can satisfy.
Turn from the shadows
They’re empty promises
Come to the light
I won’t let you down.
But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
-Isaiah 9:1-2

I’m the only one for you
I know you inside and out
My grace will never run dry
Am I, Am I,
Enough for you?

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” -John 4:8-12

Slaving to my sin
One slip at a time
Looking for anything
What can be found?

Needing a rescue
But nothing is coming
God if you’re with me
Then where are you now?

And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” -Luke 23:33-38

He asks, Don’t you know?
I’ve already provided
Come to this freedom
I’m the only one who can satisfy.
Turn from captivity
They’re lies from old.
Come to this freedom
I won’t let you down.

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. -John 8:34-36

I’m the only one for you
I know you inside and out
My grace will never run dry
Am I, Am I,
Enough for you?

I’m the only one for you
I know you inside and out
My grace will never run dry
Am I, Am I,
Enough for you?

And then it hits me…
God, you don’t owe me anything!
Here I am still climbing in that forbidden tree
And you’re still there through everything
Asking…
If you’re enough for me.

...

And the truth lies in who you are
Because to me, really... it doesn’t make any sense
In fact, that feeling is rather bazaar...
Because you became my defense.

Father, make me feel, make me know, make me understand…
You are MORE than Enough for me.

THIS is the God we serve, a God that does not need us, but desires to know us. He desires to be our fulfillment, our everything. He doesn't owe it to us, but He promises to be the good Father that provides in every situation.

Getting to Know God begins and ends with His identity as a Father, with His identity as a provider, with His identity as creator. How we become closer to knowing Him begins and ends with remembering all that He has done. It is always God's action.

"Enough" is a poem I wrote in July 2011.
